About

This started with an infographic about buying Canadian, making the rounds after trade talks with the U.S. fell apart. It was a good idea. But looking at it, one question kept nagging: how do you actually know what's Canadian? It's not as clear as a logo or a flag on the packaging makes it look.

Ownership structure isn't always obvious. A grocery banner can look local and be owned by a private equity firm somewhere else entirely. A company headquartered in Canada can be controlled by foreign investors through a share structure most people never see. This site exists to make that structure visible — nothing more. It doesn't tell you what to buy. It tells you who actually owns what you're looking at, and leaves the rest to you.

Everything here comes from public sources, with the citations and confidence level shown on every profile. See the methodology page for exactly how the maple leaf score is calculated.
